It lies in the western part of lacomarca of Aviles, on land belonging to the council of Castrillón, in the parish (civil) of Santiago del Monte and near the mouth of the Rio Nalón. Situated 47 km from the capital of the Principality, Oviedo, 40 km and 13 km from Gijon and Aviles are managed by the public entity Spanish Aiports and Air Navigation (AENA).

It is the northernmost of the Spanish airports, and their geographic coordinates 43 º 23.8 ' north latitude and 6 º 2.1' west longitude. Their International Air Transport Association (IATA) code is "OVD" and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) code is "LEAS''. Prevailing winds are from the northeast and northwest in winter and summer in the southeast and southwest.
